Does Insurance Cover Cord Blood Banking?
Most parents who ask about insurance coverage are surprised to find that standard health plans rarely pay for routine private cord blood banking. There are real exceptions, though.
When insurance often does cover banking
- A sibling has a diagnosed condition treatable with stem cells.
- There's a documented family history that makes the sample medically indicated.
- Your physician submits a letter of medical necessity to the insurer.
HSAs and FSAs
Cord blood banking is generally not HSA/FSA-eligible if it's done speculatively. It can become eligible with a letter of medical necessity from a physician documenting an existing condition or significant family risk.
Employer benefits
A growing number of employers — particularly larger companies and tech firms — include cord blood banking in family-building benefits packages. Worth checking with HR before paying out of pocket.
