Cord Blood Banking Cost in 2025: What You'll Really Pay

Private cord blood banking has two costs: the one-time collection and processing fee, and the recurring annual storage fee. Sticker prices vary widely, and the headline number rarely reflects what you'll actually pay over 20 years.

Cord Blood Banking Cost in 2025: What You'll Really Pay

Typical upfront cost

Most U.S. private banks charge between $1,400 and $2,500 for the initial enrollment, which usually covers the collection kit, courier service, processing, and the first year of storage. Bundles that include both cord blood and cord tissue banking generally run $2,500 to $3,500 upfront.

Annual storage fees

Plan on $150 to $300 per year after the first year. Many banks offer 18-year or lifetime prepay options at a discount — useful if you're confident you'll keep the sample long-term.

20-year total ownership

  • Cord blood only: roughly $4,500 – $7,500 over 20 years
  • Cord blood + cord tissue: roughly $6,000 – $10,000 over 20 years
  • Lifetime / prepay plans: often save 15–25% versus pay-as-you-go

Hidden or easy-to-miss fees

  • Courier surcharges for international or remote deliveries
  • Sample re-processing fees if collection is below volume thresholds
  • Release / shipping fees if the sample is ever transferred to a hospital
  • Cancellation or transfer fees if you switch providers

Public donation is free

If a participating hospital is near you, public cord blood donation costs the family nothing. The trade-off is that the sample joins a public registry and may be used by anyone in need.
