Cord Blood Banking for a Second or Third Baby: Worth It Again?
Once you've banked for one child, the decision for the next isn't automatic. The math changes a bit when you already have a sample on hand.
More samples = more match options
Siblings have a roughly 25% chance of being a full HLA match and a 50% chance of being a partial match. Banking each child's cord blood multiplies the chances that any family member who needs a transplant will have an in-family match.
When parents skip banking the second time
- There's no relevant family history of treatable conditions.
- The first sample is already large and high-quality.
- The cost of multiple ongoing storage fees becomes meaningful.
- Public donation is available locally as a free alternative.
